Meet M.A. Frick!
She's the talented author behind the Fate Unraveled trilogy. I'm not even joking when I refer to her as the indie Rebecca Yarros. Readers are devouring her dragon rider fantasy series like there's no tomorrow.
My favorite things about Frick, besides her books, are her beautiful soul and hilarious sense of humor. Check out our interview below!
Tell us a little about your books.
The Fate Unraveled Trilogy is a romantic fantasy–with Dragons! Forcing Fate: Book One focuses on Avyanna and her budding relationship with Rafe as she figures out how to stand on her own two feet. Following Fate: Book Two shows her struggles as Fate rips her from one life and throws her into another. Fulfilling Fate: Book Three finds her in a HFN (Happily For Now). Torn between the peace that she carved out, and saving her friends, Fate has bigger plans in store than she ever could have dreamed.
What themes do you include in your stories?
Romance! And epic tales, of course! There’s enemies-to-lovers, forbidden love (General/soldier), age gap (12yrs), forced proximity (one bed), touch-her-and-die (quite literally), Dragons (of course!). My stories follow characters. As a reader, I want to know about the people, so as a writer I follow them. It’s always funny to me when people talk about my world-building because I focus so much on the people of the story that I don’t really notice the world going up around them. The Fate Unraveled Trilogy is about Avyanna. Yes, Forcing Fate focuses on the romance, but this is her story (and Rafe’s too!), and so I had to see that through.
Who should read your books? (What are your readers like?)
People who like slooooowburns with all the tension and angst with a touch of taboo would love my books! All my books so far are slow burns, and coincidentally age gaps (lol!) filled with tension and angst. They’re all “fade to black” at this point… but I like to see just how much steam we can build up before we get there! Oh, and if you love dragons, you’ll love the Fate Unraveled Trilogy!
Are any characters based on real people? If so, who?
As a writer, our works are in essence a regurgitation of us. Our experiences, our thoughts, what has gone into our minds. So, I’m sure a few people in my books mirror those I know, but I never intentionally modeled a character after anyone. Though my husband would like to say Avyanna is a reflection of my gullibleness and forgetfulness (especially when it comes to eating!)
What inspired you to write your books?
I wrote the book I wanted to read. Full stop. I wanted a slow burn, with all the angst and tension and hot moments while the FMC tries to figure out why she has feelings for this rough character. I wanted to read a book where she settles into one life and then the “blessing” of something else rips her from that. I wanted to see her fight for herself and grow into her confidence. I remember sitting down and googling “slowburn, age gap, with dragons.” and “Slowburn age gap, older Hero younger heroine, fantasy.” and I just came up blank (unless it was vampires or fae). So, I sat down with my laptop one night and… wrote.
What is one thing you’d like readers to know about you?
I’m an open book. When it comes to my books there is nothing I will shy away from. If you want to know about my publishing journey, ask away. You have some constructive criticism about my books? Shoot! You want to vent about characters? Go ahead! I’m all about communication with my readers. They are my lifeline in this crazy world of publishing and I want them to know I cherish them and am listening to them.
When you aren’t writing, what do you do?
I’m usually wrangling one, or all three of my kiddos! But in my spare time I like to sew (fantasy costumes!), garden, and pretend I’m a homesteader with my chickens. Don’t get me started on my love for my chickens. My editor had to cut out two paragraphs where I went on about chicken eggs in Fulfilling Fate. Didn’t further the plot. Pah!
Sarah's note: Oh my gosh. That's so funny!
Do you have a newsletter we can sign up for?
Absolutely! Warning though: Bring some wine for the level of cheese included in my newsletters!
Sarah's note: her newsletters are fun. The 'cheese' will have you giggling.
Do you have a website or shopping spot where readers can purchase books or merch straight from you? (Y'all - she has sprayed edges. Check it out.)
Yes!
