Welcome to Emmer Edits, where you can find affordable copy editing, proofreading, and alpha or beta reading services. I've been writing professionally for four years, have experienced receiving multiple rounds of editing (I've been in your shoes!) while self-publishing my trilogy, and have mastered US English grammar and punctuation. I have an associate of arts degree that's older than I'd like to admit, a fresh copy of the updated Chigaco Manual of Style, and a passion for helping independent authors get their book babies ready for the world.

Proofreading
Proofreading is the last step before formatting and publishing, and it ensures your book or story is as perfect as possible.
I will do two passes of your manuscript in Google docs or Word, as this ensures I catch the most typos, extra spaces, or small mistakes throughout your work.

I will use track changes so you can see everything. You'll be in control by accepting or declining my suggestions. Please ask questions if you wonder why I'm changing something. I'm happy to share current grammar and punctuation practices, but upholding your voice as an author is incredibly important.

Copy Editing
Copy editing is essential to a novel's preparation for publishing.
This process combs through your manuscript with four goals in mind: clarity, consistency, coherency, and correctness.
In this service, I will utilize two editing passes through your entire manuscript and provide tracked changes in Word or suggestions in Google Docs. I am meticulous with this service, and will correct grammar and punctuation in addition to providing options to reduce repetition or improve clarity.
I'll point out inconsistencies (example: her blonde hair becomes strawberry blonde).
I will also produce a style guide throughout our communication on your work that will include your preferences for spelling, capitalization, etc, for specific words in your book. This will smooth the proofreading and/or formatting for anyone else who collaborates with you after we have finished copy edits.

Beta Reading
This service is for writers who have a completed manuscript but want feedback on it before pursuing additional editing, like line edits.

This is not a developmental edit.
What you can expect is one full reading pass of your manuscript with a lot of constructive and positive feedback.
I'm going to point out strengths and then reveal areas where the plot could be tweaked or the sentence structure could be even more active and interesting.
This service specializes in feedback for both the story and writing best practices.

Proofreading Third Pass Add-on
Formatting can introduce new errors into a manuscript.
I quickly learned that having one more proofreading pass of the fully formatted ebook will ensure near perfection.

Please note that this is an additional pass and should not be the main form of proofreading for your novel.

Alpha Reading
This service is for writers and authors who are working on a manuscript and need insight on if it's progressing well.

In this service, I will read through whatever you have drafted, if that's five chapters or fifty. I expect this manuscript to be rough. I'm not looking for typos; I'm looking at your story, your characters, and the flow of your plot. I will also offer tips for strong writing, especially through providing examples of active sentences.​
